Michiel Buitelaar joins Endemol

There has been some speculation in different (Dutch) blogs, and now well informed sources nearby have informed me that Former KPN Consumer Market director Michiel Buitelaar has joined Endemol. Endemol is well known for tv formats like “Big Brother” reality television, “Fear Factor” and recently “Deal or no Deal”. Michiel has been appointed Senior Director Digital and New Business. Endemol is a global leader in television and other audiovisual entertainment active in 25 countries on five continents. Michiel will have to give Endemol’s (lack of a) digital strategy a large boost.

As a former director at KPN Michiel was able to turn around a negative trend within KPN’s fixed division (operating in one of the most competitive telecom markets worldwide) becoming the broadband leader in the Dutch market. He is known as an unconventional thinker and has a clear vision on the convergence of media and telecommunication.

It will be interesting to watch the Digital strategy of Endemol unfold. They have a strong global content distribution position and this should provide them with all sorts of possibilities to develop a (cross) media Internet strategy.

I remember a typical video that sort of shows the unconventionality of Michiel, in a commercial for Picnic 2006 . Watch it here, and look for Michiel giving his presentation at Picnic 2006.

Why am I writing about it in my blog on new media, technology and their effects on social behavior? Well, if Endemol has been able to affect the social behavior of millions of people on television after they first launched Big Brother reality TV, who knows what they will be capable of in the on-line (social networks) world.
